Census: Fairfield Is Only County In Connecticut Showing Population Growth FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Fairfield County is the only county in Connecticut with a growing population, according to estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau. The population of Fairfield County expanded by 2,237 people, or 0.2 percent, between July 2014 and July 2015.  Fairfield was also the only county in the Nutmeg State to experience population growth for two years in a row.  The county's population of 948,053 residents is the largest in the state. Stratford's Roosevelt Forest Commission Ends Use Of Lethal Beaver Traps STRATFORD, Conn. -- The Roosevelt Forest Commission in Stratford has ordered an end to lethal beaver trapping, according to the Connecticut Post. The commission also declared that no hunting or trapping would be permitted in the 400-acre northern Stratford forest, the Connecticut Post reported. Due to the possible threat of a rising beaver pond to area homes, the commission also declared it would pursue the installation of a special pipe system to lower the pond's level, said the Connecticut Post. Fish Fry Raises Funds For Rhinebeck American Legion RHINEBECK, N.Y. -- American Legion Montgomery Post 429 will hold a fundraising Good Friday Fish Fry on March 25. The Fish Fry will feature haddock with french fries and homemade coleslaw for $10 and homemade New England clam chowder for $4.  Proceeds will benefit their Rhinebeck High School Scholarship Program. Jury Deadlocked In Retrial Of Bridgeport Man Charged With Killing Student BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- For the second time, a jury was unable to return a verdict in the case of a 33-year-old Bridgeport man charged with killing and dismembering his college student girlfriend and dumping her remains in Trumbull, the Connecticut Post said. Jermaine Richards, a private duty nurse in Bridgeport, was charged with murder in the death of Alyssiah Marie Wiley, 20, of West Haven, who went missing on April 19, 2013. Second Woman Charged In Checkout Scam At Westport Goodwill WESTPORT, Conn. -- A Bridgeport woman was arrested for shoplifting at the Golden Hill Street Goodwill in Westport. Shirley Jennings, 51, was accused of intentionally not scanning items while her accomplice was checking out, police said. As previously reported, Charmaine Pottinger was arrested for being the alleged accomplice. She was arrested on an active warrant and issued a court date for March 28. Jennings was charged with fifth-degree larceny and has a court date of April 5 in Norwalk.

Mahopac Library Seeks Candidates For Three Board Seats MAHOPAC, N.Y. -- Mahopac Public Library is seeking candidates for three open seats on its Board of Trustees.  Petitions are available at the library and must be signed by at least 25 qualified voters of the district. Any petition must also state the name and residence of each signer and be filed with the Election Clerk of the Library before 5 p.m. on April 21.  Board members serve three-year terms on the board beginning July 1. The election will be held at the library on June 7 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
