Ex-NJ Corrections Officer Who Killed GF, Best Friend Sentenced: Report
A former Hudson County corrections officer who killed his girlfriend and her friend in 2021 has learned his fate.
John P. Menendez has been sentenced to 50 years in state prison for the killings of Anna Shpilberg and Luiza Shinkarevskaya, both 40, with his service weapon in Newark in February 2021, NJ Advance Media reports.
Police found Shpilberg, of Randolph, suffering a gunshot wound at Edison Place and Bruen Street around 9 p.m., on Feb. 16, 2021, then-Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said at the time.

A fully renovated Hackensack home just sold for $70,000 over appraised value.
The 4-bedroom, 2.5-bath home at 431 W. Lookout Avenue hit the market on May 14 for $849,900, according to George Mikhael, the New Jersey realtor who represented the seller, a repeat investor client. Within a week, it was under contract for $920,000.
But the deal nearly fell apart.
“The appraisal came back at $850,000,” Mikhael said. “The buyer got nervous. The lender didn’t want to move forward. We asked for a second appraisal — still $850,000.”

A 44-year-old Hackensack man was arrested on multiple charges after police say they found heroin, crack, and a stolen handgun inside his home during a raid.
Richard T. Best was arrested following a raid of his Polifly Road apartment on Tuesday, July 22, Hackensack Police Chief Michael Antista.
Members of the Crime Suppression Bureau, led by Detective Lt. John Dalton, executed a court-authorized search, Antista said.
