'Crazy Rescue Ladies' Who Had 170+ Pets In Disgusting Brick Twp. Home Sentenced: Prosecutors
Two Brick Township women who called themselves the "Crazy Rescue Ladies" will spend nearly a year in jail after admitting to having more than 170 pets in deplorable conditions, authorities said. Michele Nycz, 60, and Aimee Lonczak, 51, were sentenced on Friday, Aug. 16 to 364 days in Ocean County Jail, county prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said in a news release. The women pleaded guilty on Monday, June 24 to two counts of animal cruelty, and Lonczak also entered a guilty plea for child neglect. Important Cape May County Bridge Closed Indefinitely
An important bridge helping travelers reach Cape May could be shut down for many weeks, officials said. The Middle Thorofare Bridge in Lower Township was closed to drivers, walkers, and bicyclists, the Cape May County government said in a news alert on Sunday, Aug. 18. The bridge connects Diamond Beach to Cape May. There was a "total failure" of the drive shaft motor used to open the bridge at around 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17. Body Found Near Shoreline At Barnegat Lighthouse State Park:

A person was found dead near the shoreline of Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, officials said. State park police were dispatched to the area at around 1:50 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, a state Department of Environmental Protection spokesperson said. The person's body was discovered off the western shore of the High Bar Harbor section in Long Beach Island Township. The body was sent to the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office. An autopsy will be performed to identify the person and the cause of death. Barnegat Lighthouse was first illuminated in 1859, NJDEP also said.

Driver Wanted After Pedestrian Killed In Shrewsbury Hit-And-Run Crash
Police were looking for the driver who killed a pedestrian in Shrewsbury, authorities said. The 23-year-old Toms River man died in the hit-and-run crash on Monday, Aug. 5, a Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office spokesperson said on Friday, Aug. 16. Shrewsbury police responded to a report of an unresponsive person near the intersection of Shrewsbury and Sycamore avenues just after 2:45 a.m. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Bridgeton Man Tried To Break Into Vehicle Through Window, Police Say
A Bridgeton man was accused of trying to break into a vehicle through its window, authorities said. Joe Ortiz, 30, was arrested on Friday, Aug. 16, the Bridgeton Police Department said in a news release. Officers responded to a vehicle burglary report on the 100 block of Bank Street at around 2:37 a.m. Investigators said Ortiz damaged the vehicle's window and left the scene before police arrived. A Mercer County pilot will spend more than a decade in prison for traveling to the Philippines to have sex with girls, authorities said. An Atlantic City man was accused of having a stolen gun while running away from police officers, authorities said. Jackie Mullins, 40, was arrested on Wednesday, Aug. 14, the Atlantic City Police Department said in a news release.
