BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. -- Seven local Girl Scouts have earned top honors for giving back to their community, Briarcliff-Pocantico Scouting officials announced recently. The prestigious Gold Award, earned nationwide by only 5 percent of eligible girls, is the equivalent to a Boy Scout achieving Eagle rank, they said. He voluntarily surrendered that registration in 2011, the Post said. The boar…

CARMEL, N.Y. – Eggnog and other alcoholic libations will abound at holiday parties around the region, and some folks may be tempted to take a nip or two before they get behind the wheel. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and local law enforcement officials, are reminding party-goers that -- like the commercial says -- a "buzzed" driver is still a drunk driver. Said Putnam County Sheriff Donald Smith: “A lot of folks think they know their own limits.” “They think that if they’re just a little ‘buzzed,’ then they’re still good to drive.” But this could be fur…

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- The Greenburgh Nature Center, now in its 41st year, is seeking contributions that will, it said, help it preserve its open space and educational programs. The center said its 33-acre preserve provides homes for dozens of injured or neglected animals. These special residents, in turn, help the children who visit learn and grow, it added. Center officials said that one member recently shared that the preserve had been a “haven” for his family and son, who has special needs. The parent told them that it is one of the few places that his child “feels genuinely accepted.” B…

Danbury Rep. Harding Blasts State Legislature's Hidden Motives
DANBURY, Conn. -- State Rep. Stephen Harding (R-107th District) is blasting the state legislature for what he called "hidden motives" and "veiled truths" after last week's special session approved a plan to close the gap in the state’s biennial budget. Dannell Malloy and Democrats in the legislature after the budget was approved in June. "We Republicans knew that the budget could not remain sustainable for long," Hard…
