CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. – Carl Joseph Matthes, of Cliffside Park, died Tuesday, Feb. 2. He was 79.
He was born March 13, 1936, in New York City, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.
He was the owner and operator of Cal's Appliances in Cliffside Park. He had a love for the outdoors, wildlife woodworking, landscaping, gardening, hunting and fishing.

Ernest Bergmueller, 85, North Arlington Resident
NORTH ARLINGTON, N.J. – Ernest Bergmueller, an avid sailor, carpenter and music aficionado, died Tuesday, Feb. 2 at the Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville. He was 85.
Born in Avenel, he lived in North Arlington since 1966, and served in the U.S. Navy during peacetime. He worked for Public Service Electric and Gas Company for 40 years before retiring 23 years ago.

Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra Performs With Orpheus Club
RIDGEWOOD, N.J. – The Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra continues its 76th season with an all-Brahms program, featuring the Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus and tenor soloist, Noah Baetge, at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27 at West Side Presbyterian Church.
The concert will include Brahms’ well-known “Academic Festival Overture” and “Symphony No. 2 in D Major.” The program will also present selections from Brahms’ less familiar “Rinaldo,” a cantata for solo tenor, male chorus and orchestra.

SOUTH HACKENSACK, N.J. – Brian R. Frew, a lifelong resident of South Hackensack, died Tuesday, Feb. 2. He was 59.
Prior to retiring, he fueled aircraft for Allied Aviation at Newark Liberty Airport. He was an avid fisherman and a collector of clocks, jewelry and gemstones. He was a parishioner of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

BERGENFIELD, N.J. – Kindergarten registration for the 2016-17 school year in the Bergenfield Public School District will take place Tuesday, Feb. 23, through Friday, Feb. 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at South Church, 150 West Church Street.

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Frank A. Polese of Eastchester died Monday, Feb. 1. He was 78.
He was the husband of Mary Ann Polese, father of Noreen (Richard) Martucci and Kim (Sal) DeFonce, grandfather of Erica and Nicole Martucci, and Deanna and Donna DePierro.
He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Angelina Forte Polese; and siblings Anthony Polese and Susan Cacciola.
A memorial Mass will take place Saturday, Feb. 6, at 10:45 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Bronxville. Friends who wish may contribute to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.
