New City Army Veteran Receives Rockland County Freedom Award NEW CITY, N.Y. -- A decorated Army veteran from New City was recognized by Rockland County leadership Friday for her service to the country.Retired Army Sgt. Elisabeth M. Gessel was awarded the 2016 Rockland County Freedom Award for her performance during two tours in Iraq over an eight-year career, according to county officials. Gessel, who joined the Army in August 1997, was first deployed to Kuwait in April 2003. Monroe Police Department Celebrates Promotions MONROE, Conn. -- Three Monroe police officers officially were promoted Wednesday during a swearing-in ceremony at the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library.Among those to step into new roles with the department were Sgt. Mike Sweeney, Lt. Steve Corrone and Capt. Keith White. All three officers were sworn in by Sandy Stochmal, assistant to Police Chief John Salvatorre, who also was in attendance. The department honored the officers in a Facebook post Thursday, offering "Congratulations and best of luck in future endeavors."
